Krampus combines many Pagan figures and traditions. In Bavaria today, Krampus is a terrifying half goat, half demon creature sporting a leather or wood mask, thick furs, and haunting cowbells. The Krampus traditionally would punish or reward children based on the strict Christian “bad vs. good” moral model. Nowadays, the Krampus act as companions to St. Nicholas, visiting towns on the 5th & 6th of December. Particular to Berchtesgaden, the Buttenmandl’ dress up in specially grown hay costumes, running house to house, frightening naughty children and passersby alike. The Buttenmandl’, along with the Krampus, roam the streets beating bystanders with thick braided switches. This thrilling yet threatening art of driving out evil is an insane cultural event not to be missed. You too may be deemed naughty, fit for a lashing!
Our two night (three day) trip includes transportation from the city of Munich to Berchtesgaden where you will stay at the centrally located Hotel AlpinRos. December 5th we spend in Salzburg with Christmas Markets, Krampus Parades, and a city tour. December 6th we make our way to the local salt mine where you will be transported 150 meters below the earth’s surface for a stunning tour and lesson in salt production. Lunch is above ground at the Salt Mine and then we make our way to the Grassl Enzian Schnapps factory for a tasting and tour while Krampus joins us for schnapps and beatings! Evening dinner at the Hofbräu brewery in Berchtesgaden then city tour, Krampus Marches, Christmas Markets, and an opportunity to join Krampus while they rest in their secret lair. December 7th we have breakfast and a morning walk at the Konigsee lake and Olympic Bobsled Track to shake off the cobwebs before making our way to Munich for drop off at the Munich Main Train Station.
